Software Industry Standards for Sustainability

BASDA Green and Utilities XML

The launch of the standards consisted of introductions from Matthew Taylor CEO of the RSA, ex Ski Racer Konrad Bartelski and HRH Prince Charles.  There were two case studies on the Savings and Sustainability from the NHS and Schools followed by an explanation about BASDA Green and Utilities XML and how they allow the fast roll out of savings and sustainability to all organisations.

Tim Cole, Chairman of the BASDA ebusiness special interest group started proceedings and explained how BASDA kicked off the project as a result of the European Unions cry for help from the software industry to provide the tools to deliver the 2020 and 2050 targets.  Tim then introduced Matthew Taylor.

Matthew Taylor CEO of the RSA explained how the Duke of Edinburgh and the RSA created conservation in the 70's and that the RSA had been building from this point.  The RSA started its Carbon Limited project in January 2006 as a pioneering project on personal carbon trading, and proved the inspiration to Ronald Duncan the RSA fellow behind BASDA Green and Utilities XML.  Matthew then introduced Ronald Duncan.

Ronald Duncan, Chairman of the BASDA Green special interest group and @UK PLC set out the agenda for the day, which consisted of in introduction session coving case studies with:-

• Konrad Bartelski with a video of World Cup Ski Racing along with Glacial retreat and the requirement for sustainability, with over 7 billion people on the planet
• Dr Hannah Goodman explained how the NHS, one of the best value G8 health care operations in the world, is achieving savings and sustainability.
• Nick Robbins demonstrated how providing a carbon neutral supply chain to schools was saving both the schools and the supplies significant amounts of money whilst eliminating the largest part of the schools carbon footprint.

Followed by the launch session which comprised:-

• Video Introduction to Integrated Reporting by HRH The Prince of Wales
• Presentation by Tim Cole on how BASDA Green and Utilties XML provided the bedrock for Integrated Reporting and allowed software systems to automatically exchange social and environmental information for the first time.
• An overview of the standards by Ronald Duncan along with how they are being implemented in practice by BASDA member @UK PLC.
